Peterborough Lions would like to say a big Thank You to everyone who came to see us at Werrington Carnival on Saturday.
The weather was good to us and it was nice to see so many people.
Several people asked about the work we do, so if you’ve visited this website after talking to someone on Saturday hopefully you’ll find all the information you want, but don’t hesitate to contact us if you need anything more. There also seemed to be quite a lot of interest in Lions’ Share as well – don’t forget to check it out!
At the May business meeting of Peterborough Lions Club, we were pleased to welcome Caroline Ford from the BGL Group to give us an update on her trip to Guatemala with Plan UK, who are building pre-schools and “learn through play” centres to support the cognitive development of children both directly and through engagement of whole communities.

Relatively small sums of money make a huge difference in a country still recovering from a 36-year civil war, and where more than half the 15 million population is under the age of 18, and a similar proportion live in poverty.
Peterborough Lions are proud to have been able to support Caroline and BGL Group in this extremely worthwhile project.
On Saturday 13th April, Lion Syd Walker (a Lion for many years) together with Denis, Andy and Gavin (new Lions members of the newly formed Rixton with Glazebrook Lions Club) were interviewed for a Radio 4 article about volunteering. Nigel asked Syd “why he had started the new Lions Club” and the conversation focussed around “being active within their own community and having a visual presence”.
Rixton with Glazebrook Lions Club has 17 new members and 4 transferring from nearby Warrington Lions Club. Radio 4 interviewed Lions members, District Governor Meg Philip (and husband Michael), members of the public and Mike Clipston (District Marketing & PR Officer) on the work of the Lions and the Lions Message in a Bottle project.

Peterborough Lions are pleased to have established a new relationship through which we have been able to add over 30 new shops and other retailers to www.lions-share.org.uk, allowing you to buy from them and contribute to charity at the same time, without costing you a penny extra!

Included in the list of additions are computer and memory card retailers such as Misco, Crucial and Memory Bits, gardening suppliers like Suttons Seeds and Hayloft Plants; The Book People and The Works for the bookworms out there, as well as Green & Blacks and Amelie Chocolat for the chocoholics who are still hungry after Easter! Then there’s mySupermarket, who will find you the cheapest online shop amongst Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s etc for your weekly shop, Chemist.net and Chemist-4U for your pharmaceutical supplies (a great way to stock up on antihistamines in case summer ever graces us with its presence), several gift suppliers including novelties like Marmite and myMousemat, and even quality foods from the online butcher Well Hung Meat.

Peterborough Lions were pleased to welcome Lions Christine Forest & Andrew McDougall as “Operation Friendship” guests from Rosewood Lions Club Australia.
Lions Andrew & Christine explained the significance of the Rosewood Lions Club to their local community, and reminded us of our own role supporting the community in and around Peterborough. Lion Christine presented Peterborough Lions Club President Bill Peacock with a Rosewood club banner, and Lion President Bill was happy to reciprocate.
Peterborough Lions are hosting a Race Night on Friday 8th March, at Power League in Stanground (next to Stanground College). Be there at 7:30pm to be ready for the first race at 8pm.
Everyone is welcome – it’s £4 on the door to include buffet food, with opportunities to place tote bets from £1. If you don’t know the first thing about betting on horses it couldn’t be easier to get started – just put a quid on the one you think will win and cross your fingers!
Come along, have a good evening out and help us raise some money for charity. And don’t forget to wear your lucky underwear! (Tesco and Findus jokes optional.)
It seems a very long time since the first 2012 Quiz Leaflet went out, but we can now give you a list of the winners and the answers. Thank you to everyone who took part, and well done to everyone who got all the answers right whether or not you were fortunate enough to win a prize.
Many people told us we’d made it too easy this year, and the number of returned sheets was indeed very high. Others told us they found it quite hard, and maybe the high number of completed sheets we received that turned out to have wrong answers on them bears that out too (we had 1475 returned, of which only 52 were correct, so if you completed yours but didn’t send it in you might well have missed out!). Either way, we hope everyone enjoyed the challenge and will be looking out for the new Peterborough Lions Quiz later in the year.

Peterborough Lions is sad to be losing one of its longest serving members, current treasurer and past President, Lion Roy Butcher. Roy’s departure follows his move to a warmer climate and he will be sorely missed.
The incoming treasurer, Lion Carol Rogers, has been a member of the club for a few years and brings years of accounts experience with her.
Welcome to the role Carol – you have big shoes to fill but the club has every confidence in your ability to ensure that every penny raised from our supporters around Peterborough is well looked after and wisely spent. Hopefully outgoing treasurer Roy will send us a postcard!
5 year old Logan made an Olympic torch at school. When he heard that people were selling their real Olympic torches on eBay he decided he wanted to list his to raise money for “Let’s Hear it for Deaf Children”, run by Hearing Dogs for Deaf People.
After paying, the winning bidder let Logan re-list the torch to raise more money, and this lead to the idea of the torch being re-listed after each sale with each previous winner posting it on to the next highest bidder, and thus a torch relay around the UK was started.
The 40th and final leg of the journey brings the torch to Peterborough, with the highest bidder being a member of Peterborough Lions Club.
