On Sunday, 5th August 2018, members of Peterborough Lions Club took fun and games, including our ‘Unlock the Lion’s Cage’ game, to the Itter Park fun day. Always, it seems, very well attended the glorious weather once again brought out the crowds.
The games netted a return of £110.40 for Lions’ funds, all of which will be used to support charities and good causes. The President’s thanks go to those Lions that braved the heat to run the stall and help to set it up and take it down.
On Saturday 9th June 2018 Peterborough Lions Club hosted a pub-style quiz at Eye community centre. Lions Kevin Rodgers and Jane McLean did a Trojan job of compiling the questions, with a ‘match the quotations to the famous people’ picture round testing most people.
A lovely fish-and-chip supper was provided by Fryz of Bretton, who also donated a £25 voucher as a raffle prize, for which many thanks. www.fryz.co.uk
The evening raised a net £315.39 for Lions funds, all of which will be used to support local charities and worthy causes. It is hoped to hold another, similar, quiz before Christmas so if you fancy a fun evening out watch this space!
How did you get on with our “Tom, Dick and Harry (Pat and Den Too)” quiz?
If you got them all right, then well done, and if you sent them back to us for the chance to win a prize then you’re part of a small crowd: we had lots sent back to us this year and unusually few that were 100% correct. So if you finished yours and didn’t return it thinking you stood no chance of winning then shame on you!
The winners were drawn at our February Business Meeting, and here they are:
- B Stone, Crawley (wins £100)
- E Dickenson, Dereham (wins £75)
- C Hutchcraft, Warboys (wins £50)
- N Mead, Orton Wistow (wins £25)
- P Taylor, Walton (wins £10)
- L Porter, Tring (wins £10)
- P Jeffrey, Ancaster (wins £10)
- A Towler, Wisbech (wins £10)
- L Johnson, Newborough (wins £10)
- J Burton, Uttoxeter (wins £10)
(If you were lucky enough to win, and doubly lucky enough to live locally, then we can recommend spending some of your winnings on a chance to win some chocolate!)
The answer sheet and some comments from the quiz coordinator can be downloaded here:

What’s the difference between an Easter Egg Hunt and a pub crawl?
Suppose we hid lots of giant chocolate eggs in pubs* around Peterborough and didn’t tell you where you could find them.
And then, suppose we told you exactly where they are. All you need to do is pick a box on the grid held in each pub, make a modest donation to great causes, and wait to see if you won. (Whether you trek on to the next location or stay put is up to you!)
Is that a hunt or a crawl?
Does it matter?
Sometimes helping a charity means finding a poor volunteer standing in cold rain, shaking a bucket (the shaking being a natural response to the cold). But sometimes we make it easy. (No volunteers were made to suffer in the making of this fund raising campaign!)
* If pubs aren’t your thing, but great farm fresh food is, then we’ve still got you covered! Check out the list!
The Peterborough Lions Club CAROL FLOAT, with Santa and his elves, is out and about! You may have seen it at SAINSBURYS at Bretton on the 8th and 9th of December.
It will be at MORRISONS’ at CARDEA/STANGROUND N. on Sat. 16th December, and at MORRISONS’ on LINCOLN ROAD on the 23rd and 24th December.
Our sincerest thanks go out to the above businesses for allowing us to collect funds which are used for mainly local good causes. ALL monies collected from the public, net only of actual direct costs, go into charitable causes. We raise our administration costs by holding social fund raisers within the club and through annual subscriptions.
If you are at either of the above venues on the dates mentioned please say hello and, if you are able, pop some coins in Santa’s tin. Every little helps us to carry on our good causes.
The famous PETERBOROUGH LIONS QUIZ SHEETS are now in and coming to a venue near you SOON! Look out for our sellers in your local supermarket in the coming weeks. They may also be available through other smaller outlets and our 50/50 partners, other approved worthwhile charities with which we share the proceeds on a, you guessed it, 50/50 basis. This gives direct support to such charities while still topping up our funds to support other community needs.
If you have never purchased one before these are a very popular item. They can be done individually or as a family or other group (at least one regular supporter keeps them to do after lunch on Christmas Day!). Once you’ve answered as many questions as you can, you can send in your completed sheet(s) which will go into a handsome prize draw!
This year’s topic is “Tom, Dick & Harry (Pat & Den Too)”. That is, 100 questions where all the answers include one of those names lurking within them.
To see where they’re on sale locally, take a look here – if you want to be added to this list please get in touch!
If you can’t find a local seller, you can also buy them directly from this website!
Peterborough Lions are well known for our annual quiz, but if challenging the brain cells isn’t your thing then how do you feel about beer and chocolate?
Scattered around Peterborough and surround villages you will find our annual Easter Egg Chicks Raffle. Finding the eggs is easy: the wonderful pubs that are looking after them for us are all listed below, and the eggs are huge! The hard part is guessing which lucky number will win you the giant egg-shaped chocolate treat, or the cuddly second prize.
How often can you say you’re off to the pub for charity? Go on, you know you want to….

It can’t really be that time again already, can it?
But yes, it is – the Peterborough Lions 2016 Quiz Sheets are now on sale! A highlight of the year for many people, and an chance to bang heads against the wall in frustration for others, it’s always a fantastic opportunity to test those brain cells and help us raise money for fantastic causes.
As usual you’ll be able to pick up a copy from one of several local shops and charities (if you’d like to support us by selling the quiz please get in touch), or directly from us in person at one of several locations throughout the city over the next couple of months, particular when we’re out with the Carol Float nearer to Christmas – our diary will have locations and dates when they’re available. You can also buy them online (£1 postage charge applies no matter how many you buy, and we still have some from previous years available if you missed them).
For 2016 we’re “Out and About in the U.K.” for our theme, with answers relating to places to visit and events to see around the United Kingdom. A sample to get you started: do you know which is the largest gothic cathedral in England? (Two word answer, 4 and 7 letters respectively.) I’ll be honest – I didn’t know the answer, but I do now as that sample is already filled in for you, so if you’re stuck you can always buy the quiz just to find out!

The price is unchanged from the last few years at £1.50, and you can win prizes of up to £100!
You only have until 16th January to get your answers to us, so don’t delay in hunting us down and buying one (or more). We desperately need your help in raising money for wonderful causes, including for a high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) device for kidney cancer research, a hearing dog for a deaf child, and for Addenbrooke’s Hospital, amongst others.
So massive thank-yous in advance for your support, and good luck!
