Today is Colonel (formerly Captain) Tom’s 100th birthday, seeing over £31m raised for the NHS through his efforts and the generosity of the British public.

Stay Home
So how better could today be to release the answers to our 2020 “Stay Home” quiz, which was compiled to provide some entertainment for those of us staying home to protect that very same NHS and thus save lives?
If you missed the quiz itself, you can still download it and give it a go before checking the answers. But if you’ve already had a go, how did you do?
Please let us know through our Facebook Page or contact us by other means as your feedback is really helpful to us.
And if you check back here, or on our Facebook page, early next month, we might have something else to keep you busy until our 2020/21 Quiz Sheets go on sale in September!
Don’t forget that our online store remains open through this period for you to pick up any past quizzes you missed.
COVID-19 has hit charity fundraising very hard. That applies to us in Lions as well as many of the organisations we support.
But the needs of those organisations doesn’t go away and we’re pleased to have been able to work with Douglas Valley Lions Club, as well as drawing on funds from the UK Lions Multiple District (MD105) trust, to raise the money needed to fill the gap in Deaf Blind UK‘s own fundraising, and allow them to replace their old and unreliable 20 year old braille embosser.
Collaborations like these are fantastic, but in times when welfare expenditure exceeds our fundraising capabilities they become essential, and we’re proud to have been able to help Peterborough-based DBUK with this project. They are a reminder that even whilst isolated, we can still work together for the greater good.
The Peterborough Lions Quiz is a well established annual fundraiser for us, released every September with 100 questions to answer in return for cash prizes.
COVID-19 Special
Stay Home
So at this time of national lockdown, we thought it would be fun to use the same format for a free quiz to keep the brain cells occupied during this pandemic.
This time it’s 50 questions on the subject of activities appropriate for being isolated at home. No prize, so no completion deadlines, but the answers will be released at the end of April if you want to beat that.
Feel free to share with friends and family, on social media, or to print out for those without access to a computer.
More information about this and our other quiz sheets can be found here, and if you need more questions you can buy past copies of our quiz, or pre-order this year’s, from our new store.
It seems so very long ago that the 2019/20 “Fifty Fifty” quiz first started to take shape, then went to the printers, before going on sale and heading off around the country. It even seems a long time since the deadline for completed quizzes passed (it’s actually only a month). Since then we’ve been busy marking and checking your alternative answers to see if we could add them to our final list.
And finally, that left us with a handful of completely correct sheets from which to draw winners, and that prize draw happened last night at the Club’s February business meeting.
Feedback on the whole has been that this year’s was on the tough side. We’ll endeavour to re-balance things in time for the next quiz, due out in September. (For more information, see the answer sheet.)
So, without further ado, here are the winners. If you’re on the list you should be receiving your prize cheques from us shortly. If you’re not on the list, then thank-you for taking part – your support is, as always, extremely important to us.
First Prize (£100): R Hill (Co. Donegal)
Second Prize (£75): C Martin (Ely)
Third Prize (£50): J Baker (Chesterfield)
Fourth Prize (£25): T Carvill (Co. Down)
Runners up (£10 winners):
C Chantler (Bath)
A Ashenhurst (Exeter)
V Reis (Chelmsford)
A Granville (Peterborough)
P Burden (Wokingham)
B Stone (Crawley)
Once again thank you to everyone who bought a quiz, whether or not you completed it and sent it back to us. We hope you’ll be back in September for the 2020/21 Quiz!
Yes, the day has finally come; Peterborough Lions Quiz Sheets are now officially available for sale.
Peterborough Lions Fifty-Fifty Quiz
This year Peterborough Lions Club reaches the ripe old age of 50, and so our topic this year, “Fifty-Fifty” celebrates the people (and business, events, etc) who share this milestone, as well as anything relating to the number 50 itself.
This year, our primary projects are replacing our community minibus and supporting local youth projects.
For now the easiest way to guarantee getting one is via our web shop, but over coming days they will start to be available from local shops and businesses too, and a list will be made available on our website.
Anyone who would like to help us sell them is invited to contact us, whether to sell them to raise money directly for us, or on a shared “50:50” basis where half of the sale proceeds go to another great cause that you wish to support. Over £90,000 has been raised this way in past years.
Our annual quiz sheets go on sale on 1st September, and we’ve just got them back from the printers so we’re ready and raring to go!
We’ll be telling you the topic, and the reason for it, very soon now. But in the meantime we thought we’d share some of the process behind getting the quiz sheets ready each year, by answering some of the questions we’re often asked.
Update: The community minibus has now been replaced! See community minibus page As many of you will know, during 2019 we sadly lost our community minibus to an accident and were striving hard to replace it as soon as possible.
In the meantime, we’ve received a wonderful testimonial from one of its regular users, 2nd Nene Scouts, an extract from which follows:
A bit short notice we appreciate but THE WOOLPACK STANGROUND are holding an all day MOTOWN music event on Saturday this week (the 27th July) with proceeds to come to Peterborough Lions Club. Whether you are already a regular or just fancy checking out a pub new to you both Meri, the landlady, and Peterborough Lions Club will be most grateful for your support.
Meri used to run The Heron in Stanground, before the freeholders sold it off for housing. She took over The Woolpack on the departure of the previous landlord and has invested a great deal of effort in bringing it up to scratch. There is a lovely Beer Garden which runs down to the river, and food is on offer; why not go for Sunday lunch if you can’t make Saturday.
It’s that time of year again, where we celebrate Easter with chocolate eggs, and (optionally) a bit of a pub crawl, all for the good of local causes!
Once again we’ve “hidden” (see map!!) giant chocolate eggs in pubs* and other locations around Peterborough. This time, though, they’re Thorton’s eggs. Does that whet your appetite? The read on!
If you find one (typically on the bar or somewhere obvious), all you need to do is pick a box on the grid held in each pub (and other location), make a modest donation to great causes, and wait to see if you win. (Whether you trek on to the next location or stay put is up to you!)
Is that a hunt or a crawl? (Does it matter?)
Sometimes helping a charity means finding a poor volunteer standing in cold rain, shaking a bucket (the shaking being a natural response to the cold). But sometimes we make it easy. (No volunteers were made to suffer in the making of this fund raising campaign!)
Each egg is accompanied by a fluffy toy as second prize. Parents are free to choose whether the egg or the toy should be shared with their kids, though!
* If pubs aren’t your thing, but great farm fresh food is, then we’ve still got you covered! Check out the list!
Thank you to everybody who took part in our Heroes & Villains quiz! Whether you were lucky enough to be listed below as one of our winners, or never got past the first question, your support is invaluable to us and we cannot do any good work in the community without your support.
At our February club business meeting we were fortunate to have District Governor Lion Mandy Hawksley visiting us, and she was happy to carry out the winners draw with the help of other visitors and club members.
The winners all succeeded in achieving 100% – well done to all of you. They were drawn in the following order:
